Grant took the chequered flag in all three heats of the final round of the national F3 series.
Having started in the Formula 3 class just over 12 months ago, there was some irony in Grant’s victory at Penrith.
“My first Formula 3 race was at Penrith on this very course last year,” Grant said. “I also managed to flip the boat over backwards, so it wasn’t a great start to my racing career. So to return to the same venue 12 months later and take out the Australian championship is pretty amazing.”
Grant races a purpose built timber Formula 3 hull powered by an Evinrude F3 race motor. The boat is prepared by Bob Trask’s GTR Race Boats business in Brisbane, with Bob no doubt having a fair influence in advice and guidance for Grant.
“We’re all immensely proud of Grant’s achievement in such a short period of time,” father Bob Trask said.
Grant suffered a near life threatening pedestrian accident when he was small and as a result lost a leg above the knee. While Grant has endured plenty of life’s experiences at a disadvantage, boat racing has been one aspect of his life where he has been able to compete as an equal with others.
Before each race, Grant removes his prosthetic limb and climbs into the race capsule. When he is strapped in and the canopy lid comes down, he is competing as an equal with every other driver.
Having now proven himself in the feeder Formula 3 class, Grant is set to step up to the bigger Formula 2 category of race boat.
“I have engineered a Formula 2 race hull at GTR Race Boats, and this is the hull that Grant will be running in 2007,” Bob Trask said. “In preliminary testing with a Mercury SST120 race engine on the transom the boat is already good for 103 mph and will no doubt be faster once we develop the package further.”
The 2007 season will see three Trasks lining up on the start dock under the banner of the Trask Development Corporation/Sea Quest team. Alongside Grant will be his father Bob in the #19 F1 boat with Bob’s brother David in the #18 F1 boat.
While the Trask Development Corporation/Sea Quest team is a close knot unit on the shore, when the helmets are buckled up and the start flag drops, it’s every Trask for himself in the heart stopping charge to the first turn.
