Racing on the 1.92 km course, Trask Brothers Racing due of Bob and David Trask entered the fifth round of the UIM F1 World Championship with high expectations. Both had come off a good showing in the previous rounds in China.
But bad weather and rough conditions can bring the best laid plans undone. In practice David qualified the better of the duo taking 11th position on the start dock. Bob Trask’s weekend began badly with him lining up in the number 18 pole position.
Proof that the rough conditions were demanding to say the least with two boats blowing over in the qualifying shootout. Both accidents were captured on television and beamed to news services throughout the world.
“We were hoping for better conditions on race day,” Dave Trask said. “We felt that we could perform much better in the calmer water, but unfortunately the wind and swell are two things that we cannot control, let alone plan for.”
Race day indeed was unkind again, with officials holding the start of the race for as long as possible. Eventually the green flag dropped on the field, and on the opening two laps, three boats were retired.
Unfortunately Bob Trask was one of the three executing a massive wipe out on the turn. With his boat damaged and fuel line split, he hobbled the Trask development entry back to the pit area only to have his boat sink before the lifting slings could be attached.
This left Dave Trask out on the course to fly the Trask Development Corporation flag.
After 45 gruelling laps and finishing soon after sunset in fading light, Dave Trask came across the finish line in 8th position outright to once again score points in the Drivers Championship.
“This was one of the roughest and most physically draining races that I have ever contested,” David Trask said. “I was very glad to see the chequered flag out there.”
With just three days rest before the sixth round of the UIM F1 World Championship, Bob Trask was left to survey the damage to his boat and rue what might have been.
“I had a massive incident and was very lucky to not barrel roll,” Bob said. “The transom has been ripped out of the boat and while it can be repaired we need some time to do the job.”
“We will be running the back up Trask Development Corporation boat for the next round, again in Doha in a few days. I have my boat builder from GTR Race Boats flying in to repair my number one hull so that we can go to the UAE and contest the seventh and eighth rounds to wrap up the series in December.”
In the 2007 Drivers Championship, David Trask is currently in 9th position having scored points now in three rounds and DNF’d in two others, while Bob has completed all races and is positioned 18th. Three rounds remain to be contested.
The next round of the 2007 UIM World F1 Powerboat series is to be staged at Doha, Qatar on November 27th 2007
