Yamaha Powers Marine Construction

Yamaha has become the outboard power of choice for Victorian-based marine construction company, K.V. Johnson Constructions.

Specialising in the construction and maintenance of marina and channel infrastructure, K.V. Johnson Constructions has experienced firsthand the performance and reliability of Yamaha on a number of their hard working vessels, with their latest addition FT60 testament to their admiration of the brand.

K.V. Johnson Constructions provides a range of specialised services in marine construction with the installation, replacement and removal of marine piles a core function of their business. The demands placed on their equipment are extremely high with their specialised barges, drilling machines and outboard engines all expected to perform day in, day out

K.V. Johnson Constructions’ first experience with Yamaha began when they purchased a power cat with twin 225hp 2-stroke outboards on the back. When one outboard motor died, their local Yamaha dealer, Central Marine, suggested a repower with twin F250 4-stroke engines. The result was outstanding.

“Repowering our 225hp direct injection 2-strokes with Yamaha 4-stroke technology helped to more than halve our fuel consumption,” said Paul Johnson, Work Supervisor at K.V. Johnson Constructions.

“Our power cat holds 1200 litres of fuel and our old 2-stroke engines gave us an operating range of 140 Nm cruising at 21 knots. After repowering with Yamaha F250 outboards, we are achieving between 350 – 400 Nm from the same tank with a faster cruising speed of 25 knots. These Yamaha outboards are absolutely brilliant.”

This first experience helped fuel the purchase of two more Yamaha 4-stroke outboards with two compact F25 engines chosen to power both of K.V. Johnson Constructions’ flat-bottom punts. These versatile punts are used as tenders to support their on-water construction projects.

The latest Yamaha addition to the K.V. Johnson Constructions team is a new Yamaha High-Thrust FT60 outboard. Chosen to power a 5 tonne custom-built barge, the 60hp Yamaha workhorse has only been in service for several days and already reaping praise from its owners.

“The new FT60 has made our barge a much better boat to operate,” said Paul.

“We expect a lot from our Yamaha engines with a recent maintenance project seeing our outboards in operation constantly for 10-12 hours a day, 5 days a week. They are clean, easy to operate, easy to start and can handle our harsh working environment.”

Routine outboard servicing by Central Marine is a key priority for Paul Johnson and his fleet with his twin Yamaha F250 outboards already clocking up 200 trouble-free operating hours. While early days yet, Paul expects his latest FT60 to perform like many other Yamaha 4-stroke outboards serving heavy duty commercial roles around Australia - reliably and efficiently.

Yamaha outboards are available through an Australia-wide network of authorised Yamaha outboard dealers.  All Yamaha 4-stroke outboards are supported with a full 4-year manufacturer’s warranty and all 2-stroke outboards are backed by a 3 year warranty – standard conditions apply.
