New Yanmar 6HY Series Delivers Clean, Adaptive and Dependable Power

Yanmar has unleashed a new generation of marine diesel engines for commercial marine applications where dependability is a must and long service intervals, low fuel consumption and ease of maintenance are highly sought after.

The new Yanmar 6HY-ETE  Series engine provides owners with a choice of flexible power outputs to cater to a range of uses, from high speed planning hull vessels such as Patrol Craft / Passenger  Ferry  and Cray Fishing applications to heavy duty displacement type vessels such as fishing trawler’s or tug boats.

The 13.73 litre, 4 valve in line 6 cylinder, twin turbocharged intercooler diesel engine boasts four power ratings between 303kW ( 412mhp) @ 1880rpm to 515kw (700mhp) @ 2200rpm, depending on the application and duty cycle proposed.

This low-profile, heat exchanger equipped package, which is offered with a full range of factory approved installation accessories, is already achieving great results for Yanmar’s commercial customers with good acceleration, an ultra-clean exhaust and strong performance.

“We’ve already documented some very positive feedback from our customers in the local Australian market for the new 6HY-ETE,” said Power Equipment National Marine Sales Manager, Michael Blair.

In the last 12 months we have supplied  many 6HY’s  into planing and displacement hull repowers, from Aluminium constructed Cray fishing vessels, FRP drop line fishing applications and steel hull displacement boats. All of our clients have reported improved acceleration, excellent fuel consumption, low noise and impressive performance.”

The 6HY-ETE Series has already gained excellent sales and performance records in the Japanese, Middle East and Asian commercial marine markets.

“I personally have had the opportunity recently to travel to both the Japanese and Asian regions where the 6HY series is well entrenched,” said Michael.

“I must admit the customer feedback and the durability of the 6HY-ETE Series being achieved in these regions is very encouraging for us and our dealer network. With this new model Yanmar offers an emission compliant IMO certified product with full classification certification to ABS/LR/RINA/NK (if required). The 6HY Series is fitted standard with a non-electronic governor configuration for longevity and ease of maintenance. The simplicity and absence of electronics has been a major decision making factor for many commercial operators”.

For patrol boat and seasonal fishing applications the 6HY produces up to 700mhp at 2,200rpm. Twin low-lag turbo chargers and an astonishingly efficient intercooler allow the 6HY to operate across a broad range of power modes while delivering the reliability Yanmar owners come to expect.

The fuel efficiency and combustion performance of the 6HY has also been enhanced even when compared with their earlier models such the 6KY and 6HA series- models which already had an excellent reputation for low maintenance and market leading fuel economy.

The 6HY engines use a new staggered injection nozzle and patented combustion chamber design named ASSIGN which was developed by Yanmar originally for their large bore, low speed propulsion engines. This technology has enabled a fuel consumption specification of 201 g/kw-h at 100% load from the heavy duty 368kw (500mhp) model, a result which is  giving owners something to smile about in the current times of rising fuel costs.

Where large variations of operating speeds are encountered, the new ASSIGN technology also allows for a very wide rpm range where optimum fuel consumption is achieved which again appeals to many owners of high speed craft.

In situ engine overhauls are facilitated by the standard inclusion of cylinder block inspection ports which provide easy access to the connection rod assemblies without the need to remove the engine oil pan or lifting the engine from the mounting foundation- a feature typically found only in purpose built marine propulsion engines such as this.

In-built durability is a key characteristic of the 6HY-ETE which features a totally new cylinder block design that offers improved rigidity when compared to earlier models. Mechanical engine governor controls and Yanmar’s own fuel system components further assist reliability with the published oil change and filter intervals maintained at the YANMAR commercial model standard of 500 hours.

Power Equipment is the exclusive and authorised Australian, PNG and South Pacific distributor of Yanmar Marine and Industrial diesel engines importing product from Yanmar plants in Japan, Asia, USA and Europe. With an extensive marine dealer and branch network. Power Equipment has the expertise and experience to assist commercial vessel owners and boat builders for both new installations and repowers.
